So far, I have discussed uniforms, strict dress codes and harsh punishments that come along with violating school dress codes, but how harsh can a school get in the name of "discipline?"
I was on YouTube, our generation's most valuable site (good job Google), and I found this CRAZY news story about a middle school in Vancouver, Washington. The principal at McLaughlin Middle School called the police after some of his students protested the newly enforced dress code. Yes, the man called the police on some middle schoolers!
I’m all for enforcing rules, but I mean, wow! What was this man thinking? Can you imagine? These kids will have an arrest on their record just for standing up for something they believed to be wrong. This would have been a perfect opportunity to show those children how out democracy works and that having a voice is very important. Instead, this man acted as if he was scared of preteens and had them arrested. This was such an over-exaggeration; I don’t know what else to say about it other than that this reaction was pathetic, cowardly, and lazy. I hope the parents will help their “menace to society” children find a positive lesson out of this. There’s always a silver lining even if it’s hard to find.
WOW!!! That's CRAZY!!! However, I think viewers would have had a better idea in terms of what the protest was really about if the video had shown MORE regarding the details of the incident itself. Maybe, there was a good reason for the school administrator calling the police. Some folks may not have thought that the school's administrator's actions were cool. However, he's not there to be cool with the students, he's there to do a job!!! If they can't follow the rules, they can go to another school that is less strict!!! Easy peasy, lemon squeezie!!!
ReplyDeleteThey're out of line for getting those kids arrested over something so insignificant. I smell a first amendment case, but that's not likely because we often don't stand up for our beliefs these days, at least when it comes to going up against a person of power.
ReplyDelete.... Dude, are you serious? Police on 13 year olds because of dress code protests? "He's there to do a job"... You've gotta be kidding!

LOL I can't respond right now sir. And Then you end it with "Easy peasy, lemon squeezie"(exclamation mark x 3)? I can't take it seriously.
I just KNOW it's got to rub you the wrong way... I mean I know the media really effs sh*t up but to be arrested for "disobeying administrators"? I don't know about cowardly, but that's taking disciplinary measures to the extreme(unnecessarily extreme).
Plus, not everyone has the opportunity to travel to another school. This smells like an issue of class. Public schooling is a matter of zoning. Change in dress code implies changes in school budgets and fiscal responsibility...
Honestly, I'd like to see a case concerning a nudist vs. the dress code. Wake me up when that's on the new, please.
